the Second World War and replaced 1961. By Charles Lee.
Kentish ragstone with Bath stone dressings. Chancel, nave,
north and south transepts, north and south aisles, south
porch, and north-west tower. East window pointed-arched with
five lights and curvilinear tracery; north transept main
window similar, the rest in the transept flat-arched. Three
aisle windows between buttresses, with two trefoiled lights;
corbelled parapet; clerestory windows four-centred with two
trefoiled lights; late C20 dormer with air vent in north aisle
roof. West window pointed- arched with five lights and
curvilinear tracery; trefoiled spherical triangle in gable
above; gabled south porch. Tower has a gabled, stone-roofed,
porch with pointed-arched openings and many shafts to front
and entrance, angels to kneelers, and low-relief carving to
tympanum. Tower of three stages, the setback buttresses gabled
to the first stage, offset to the second and gabled to the
third; stair tower to north-east corner; cusped Lombard frieze
and ballflower ornament to eaves of broach spire with
two-light lucarnes and short gabled buttresses to alternate
faces of octagonal spire.
Low stone gate piers to corner of Penn Road and Hillmarton
Road, gabled with buttresses, lesser crossgables now lacking
finials and pierced quatrefoil decoration; two smaller gabled
piers also with quatrefoil decoration to either side; walls of
random rubble with coping for c.30 metres in Hillmarton Road
and c.50 metres in Penn Road.
INTERIOR: . The church interior now consists of chancel, nave,
south transept and north porch only, the rest partitioned off
for office and church use. Chancel arch with double chamfer
and chamfered inner order carried on corbelled colonnettes;
the chancel floor is covered with marble and extends into the
nave to the end of the north transept bay, terminated by low
walls. Four-bay arcade to nave, with a double chamfer and
continuous hoodmould with ballflower stops. Large panelled
organ in south transept with original painted decoration to
pipework. Font at west end, square in plan, carried on
clustered quadruple colonnettes at each corner, and decorated
with emblems of the Evangelists. Panelled roof to chancel,
nave roof with arched braces carried on corbelled colonnettes.
