05/07/50 Muxlowe House
(Formerly Listed as:
ARELEY LANE, Areley Kings
Areley Hall) GV II House, formerly part of Areley Hall (q.v.), comprising its
original kitchen and service wing. Parts of the fabric may be
early C16, much of it is early C17, with some late C19
alterations and re-facing. Timber-framed with some brick
additions, all roughcast rendered and with plain tiled roof.
Main elevation faces south, the original low range of 2 bays
to the right, with central projecting gabled bay with exposed
posts and mid-rail. Timber-framing also visible in the bay
right of this, though the gable stack wall is partly coursed
and squared sandstone. Beyond the original range to the left,
2 gables added c1870, much taller, with wide casement windows
on each floor with mullions and transoms, and coving to
decorative timber and brick nogging in gable apexes. Tall
stack with clustered brick flues between these gables. Rear
elevation roughcast with late C19 casement windows, but rear
wing, originally detached, is a timber-framed range, probably
late C16 or early C17, and probably not originally in domestic
use. It is framed in square panels with queen post roof
construction and some tension bracing. 4 panels high, 13 in
length, with windows inserted within the panels, and one wood
mullioned unglazed window in upper storey. Stack added against
east wall, which has inserted garage doors to north.
Internally, the principal room of the main range has square
section moulded spine beam. In the upper storey, the remains
of curved principal trusses (or upper crucks) with wind
braces.
