ST 77 NW DYRHAM AND HINTON C.P. DYRHAM PARK 5/156 Orangery attached to south east of
Dyrham House

I Orangery (known as greenhouse in C17). Started in 1701 by William Talman, front
slope of roof glazed c. 1800 by Repton. Limestone ashlar, coursed freestone to
rear. East elevation of 5 bays, central bay broken forward, flanked by heavy
paired Tuscan columns, round-headed double glass doors with voussoirs alternately
vermuculated, stone stage's head set on keystone. Paired Tuscan pilasters
dividing outer bays to left and right and at each end, each bay has round-headed
opening with 24-pane sash and splayed glazing bars in upper section, rusticated
voussoirs and large frost-work keystones; plinth, pulvinated frieze with Latin
inscription in 3 sections "servaremodum, finemque tueri, naturamque sequi" (from
Lucan's Pharsalia), cornice, tall parapet with paired pilasters over ground floor
columns and pilasters, with paired raised panels between, cornice; balustrade
above has paired plinths above pilasters and 4 urns set on plinths, 2 centrally,
one at each end, urns fluted with swags, moulded cornice above balustrade. South
elevation has 3 large 24-pane sashes in moulded architraves with cills, cornice
above frieze returned, central section of balustrade above with pilasters at each
end, at lower level than balustrade to east. Wall above balustrade ramped up at
each side to join balustrade wall to east and plain pier to west. Door in
chamfered surround at basement level and section of string course above. Rear
has 5 varied windows at basement level, all 2-light casements recessed, with
leaded lights and square mullions, 3 doors, string course above, coved cornice,
blocking course and upper cornice. Interior: unplastered rubble walls, blocks
of dressed stone replacing beams in mortices in walls, possibly from former
