House and stable yard, now flats. 1755 with C19 second floor to house and extensive C20 alterations to stable yard. House; south front: red brick headers with stone dressings, plinth, and frieze and dentil cornice between first and second floors. Hipped old tile roof with 2 stacks off-centre to left and right. 3 storeys; 7 bays, glazing bar sashes. Ionic brick pilasters with stone bases and capitals supporting triangular pediment over centre 3 bays with Venetian window and flanking fan ornament in tympanum. Dentil bricks above second floor windows; 3 central first floor windows with architraves; third and fifth ground floor windows with balustrading beneath, arched heads, architraves and imposts. 2 flights of stone steps with wrought iron spearhead railings to central French casements with arched head, architrave and imposts. 5 bay side elevations. 3 bay blank arched linking walls set back to left and right of red brick with stone dressings. Set back flanking pavilions: red brick with moulded wooden eaves cornice to hipped old tile roof with triangular pediment and central stack. Square plan with recessed comers. 2 storeys; 3 bays, glazing bar sashes. North front: mezzanine between first and second floors. 10 steps with wrought iron balustrade to 2 central half glazed doors with radial fanlight. Doorcase consisting of architrave, triple keystone, and 2 unfluted Doric columns supporting triglyph frieze with guttae and cornice. Stable yard: east and west ranges: red brick with plinth. Moulded wooden eaves cornice to hipped old tile roof with 2 ridge stacks off-centre to left and right and 2 dormers each side of central triangular pediment above large blocked archway with impost bands. One storey and attic; 8 bays, glazing bar sashes with 6-panelled doors in third and sixth bays with circular overlights, reeded architraves, and flat hoods. 3 bay blank arched linking walls to left and right of red brick with atone dressings. North range: red brick with plinth. Moulded wooden eaves cornice to hipped old tile roof with 2 ridge stacks off-centre to left and 2 to right. Central segmental arched wooden cupola with ogee lead cap and weathervane and 3 dormers to left and right of central slightly projecting triangular pediment over large round arched carriage entrance with impost bands. 1 1/2 storeys. 15 bays, glazing bar sashes. 6-panelled doors in fourth and twelfth bays with circular overlights, reeded architraves and flat hoods. Linking walls to left and right, each with blank segmental arch. North-east and north-west corner blocks: red brick with moulded wooden eaves cornice to hipped old tile roof. 2 storeys and attic. Interior: principal ground floor rooms have modest plaster ceilings, double-height staircase hall with stucco wall panels, 3-flight square well staircase with C20 wrought iron balustrade, and first floor doorcase with shouldered architrave, pulvinated frieze and broken triangular pediment. This house, formerly known as Calcot House, was originally built for Sir John Blagrave. V.C.H.
