GV II*

Large House in grounds. C16 fragments, with Cl7 rebuilding much in evidence. West wing replaced in 1922 by E. P. Warren, and extended southwards in the 1930's. Rubble and dressed stone walls. Stone slab roof with 4 gables to entrance front, each with stone gable- copings. Tripled stone stacks at west end eaves, and on bay 2 of entrance front. North (front) elevation, 2 storeys and attics. 4 gabled bays of differing projections and widths. Each 'bay' described here including door positions: 1) East end of front: 3-light stone mullion windows (cavetto) with separate labels over. Lead lights and metal casements. 2 blocked elliptical lights face south. Doorway in west face, C16, with moulded stone jambs and trefoil spandrels above the depressed-arch head. Label, square-stopped. Plank and muntin door, Cl9. 'Bay' 2): wider and with projecting central stack. One string at second floor level. Chamfered plinth. Large single-light windows with moulded jambs and labels over, probably Cl9 or C20 insertions. Bay 3) 2 windows wide, same large windows with labels. Iron casements with tension bars, probably C17. Moulded stone string over ground floor, later C17. Front doorway, late Cl7 with stone architrave continued up into 2-lights over, divided by an ovolo mullion. String becomes a slightly projecting cornice. Front door, with 2 recess panels, studded, c.Cl8. Bay 4), 1922 rebuild, 3 windows, cross-transomed mullions with hollow chamfers, leaded metal casements. Separate labels over. Gabled attic storey to match. 1930's wing to south has 4 windows, cross-transomed wooden frames with ovolos. Segmental stone heads. Interior: much altered. Middle room of ground floor former hall with screens to west. Screen, oak, Cl6 probably reset. Octagonal posts with moulded base plate, rail and head, with recess and fielded panelling. 5 bays. Central 2-leaf door, c.1700, bolection- moulded. Partition on east side of former hall, c.1700, with bolection- moulded panelling. Staircase, c.1700, turned balusters, square navels, considerably repaired.
