G.V. II House at NGR 745789, formerly dower house of Codrington family and Dodington Park (qv). C18
origin, early and mid C19 alterations and additions. Rubble, partly rendered,
brick, stone dressings and quoins, double Roman tiled, slate and stone slate roofs
with raised coped verges, stepped stonework under verges, stone and brick gable
stacks, 2 stone stacks at front eaves with small recessed panels. Front of house
now rear. East elevation has 2 storeys and 4 windows, ground floor has three
16-pane sashes in plain stone surrounds, 2nd bay from left a panelled and glass
door with flat stone hood on brackets, low stone wall to each side surmounted by
carved lion; first floor has four 4-pane sashes, each wih small lancet above;
2-storey block attached to left has single storey lean-to, ground floor 8-pane
light and first floor 4-pane light. Right return has French window with overlight
in moulded stone surround, first floor has 2-light window with segmental heads,
hood mould and relieving arch, attic fixed light of 2 panes with hood mould;
lower wing to right has ground floor sash in moulded architrave with floating
cornice. Left return has sash to rear of lower block, sash at ground and first
floor of house and small fixed light ground floor left. Rear of picturesque
composition, has 2 gabled 2½ storey blocks, central single storey connecting block
with balustrade and central die, central tower set back with ogee shaped roof;
each gabled block has sash at ground floor as at right return, altered for
casement panes to right, central panelled and glass door with pointed arch,
fanlight with radial glazing bars and hood mould, 3 varied basement windows,
first floor has two 2 light casements with hood mould, tower has pointed arched
window with hood mould, small projection to each side with pitched roof and single
fixed light, gabled dormer front and rear, fixed light to each side. Block to
right has basement opening with segmental head, 4-light casement with chamfered
mullions and hood mould at ground floor, similar 3-light casement at first floor,
brickwork in wall. Interior: front right room has stone reeded fireplace with
marble mantel, skirting and moulded dado rail, shutters to all windows, reset
corner cupboard with shaped shelves, squint to left; rear right room has small
acanthus-leaf cornice, front left has marble fireplace with beaded surround, stone
open-well stair in rear hall, banded mahogany wreathed handrail. Attic room in
tower has exposed rafters.
