4/46 Oldhouse Farmhouse - GV II
Farmhouse. Probably C17, extended in C18. Thinly coursed rubble, cased timber-frame, stone slate roof, hipped to left; brick end stack to right hand side at junction with C18 granary extension. Roughly north-west/ south-east alignment, 2 timber-framed cells with dairy extension to left and granary extension to right both in rubble; former gable access masked by granary; the whole front forms an elongated hill farm when put in context with adjoining barn and cow house (qv) to north-west. Two storeys., 3 windows under segmental heads: small C19 light to left, 4-pane C19 casement to its right, two 16-pane C20 casements right of ledged C20 entrance door, granary has tallet stairs at gable end. Interior: stone flagged floors, stop- chamfers to main ceiling beams, 2 principal rooms divided by a partition, perhaps plank and muntin with 4-centred arch headed opening. Two further 4-centred heads: one to former gable access with adjacent draw-bolt slots, to right of fireplace; to its left, another leading to newel stairs. Attached to the large wooden lintol of the fireplace is a hinged, probably C18, board to act as a smoke deflector. Weather timber-framing between 2-cell part and former dairy. Newel stairs: rubble treads, small light to rear elevation, roofed by series of thin corbelled stones. On the first storey is a 2- centred head through timber-framed partition between 2 cells. Roof structure has wind braces, A-frame truss to centre of 2 cells, but next truss to west formerly an exposed decorative gable end has pegged saltire-cross rising from collar to upper purlin level. "1720" carved on inner side of lintol at head of granary steps.
