Details
WHIXALL C.P. SHROPSHIRE UNION SJ 43 NE CANAL (south side) 1/206 Roving Bridge - House - II Toll keeper's cottage, now farmhouse. Circa 1800 on William Jessop's and Thomas Telford's Ellesmere Canal. Red brick (English bond); pyramidal graded slate roof with wide spreading eaves and central red brick stack with ceramic chimney pots. Square plan. 2 storeys to canal side plus semi-basement to rear. Blind roundels to first floor flanking C19 casement directly below eaves; ground floor has segmental-headed horizontal sliding sash to left and C19 casement to right of original gabled brick porch with boarded door and semi- circular fanlight. Interior: semi-basement has exposed ceiling joists and 3 round-headed doorways with original plank doors. Situated at the junction between the main line of the former Ellesmere Canal and its Prees branch. The Ellesmere Canal Company amalgamated with the Chester Canal Company in 1813 and became part of the Shropshire Union in 1846.
