Details
HAWKLEY SU 73 SE 5/4 Hawkley Hurst 23/01/86 II Mansion, now flats. 1861, by Teulon, in a Cotswold style. Walls of sandstone; ashlar, snecked, and polygonal. Bath stone dressings; finials, kneelers, smooth flush bands, double-chamfered mullions and transoms, plinth. Steep tile roof, hipped dormers; prominent stacks. South elevation of symmetrical form, with gabled projections at each side and central two-storeyed porch with a parapet; two storeys and attic, 1.1.1.1.1 windows. The windows are two, four and five mullioned lights, and four and five mullioned and transomed lights. Tudor arched doorway beneath a moulded canopy on brackets, extended at each side above small windows. The east range has three gables of unequal width, two above slight projections and that at the south side associated with a massive stepped stack; again, the standard form of each window is presented to two, three, four and seven-light mullions, with two, six and seven mullions with transoms. The short west range has windows grouped within an angled bay with a window on each side, all beneath a deep parapet. The north side of the building forms an angle around the entrance forecourt: a projec- tion at the west side contains the doorway, a Perpendicular arch within a moulded frame: a deep recess has a mullioned and transomed staircase window of twenty lights: the north side has a circular turret (staircase) with a conical roof and descending lancet windows. The north end of the block has three single-storeyed service wings, of varied form but still with stone walls, hipped tile roofs, and mullioned windows.
