NZ 05 SE CONSETT SHOTLEY GROVE ROAD (West side) Shotley Bridge 5/79 (inset) Grove House and Azalea Court GV II Formerly Shotley Grove House. House, now 2 separate houses. Dated 1826 on top of pediment (owner's information), for Joseph Annandale, paper manufacturer. Pinkish sandstone ashlar front with plinth; other elevations yellow sandstone rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings; some tooled; roof of thick graduated dark grey slates, with part of rear wing roof renewed in Welsh slate. L-plan. South garden front 2 storeys, 5 bays. Door of 6 panels over 3 vertical beaded panels, with patterned fanlight, in Tuscan surround with block capitals supporting open pediment, in second bay. 16-pane sashes in plain reveals have fine glazing bars and projecting stone sills; giant corner pilasters support eaves band, panelled over pilasters, and gutter cornice which breaks forward over pilasters. Low-pitched hipped roof; no chimneys visible. Right return 2 storeys, one bay, with semicircular bowed projection on ground floor containing curved French window under gutter cornice and blocking course; sash window above. Irregular set-back rear wing, with round-headed stair window. Left return 2 storeys, 3 bays, with similar ground-floor projection containing curved sash window. Set-back rear wing 2 storeys, 6 ground-floor windows; 3 first- floor windows and right round-headed stair window. All windows have glazing bars, those to stairs intersecting; tooled surrounds to returns of main block; flat lintels and projecting sills in rear wing. Extruded rear porch has C20 6-panelled door and sash window with glazing bars. Interior: narrow open-well, open-string stair has rounded handrail on slender stick balusters, with wreath and curtail; left ground-floor room has moulded stucco cornice, and chimney-piece with ribbon and foliage decoration; right room has moulded stucco wall panels, cornice with vine decoration, and wood chimney-piece with paired Ionic pilasters and green and white Wedgwood corner medallions. 6-panel doors, fluted architraves with block corners, and panelled window shutters throughout.
