Terrace of 32 houses, now shops and houses. c1810-20 with
later additions and alterations including late-C19 and C20
shop fronts. Stucco over brick, with slate roofs, brick and
stucco party-wall stacks and wrought-iron balconies.
EXTERIOR: mainly 2 storeys, 2 first-floor windows each, that
to left has 3 first-floor windows; to south return (High
Street) 3 storeys with attics to mansard roof at left, 2:2:1
first-floor windows. Service ranges and workshops to rear. 6/6
and 8/8 sashes throughout where original, some blind windows,
all in plain reveals and with sills. To south return the
second floor has 3/6 and 6/6 sashes. Entrances at left,
6-panel doors where original, with fanlights (some with
decorative glazing bars). Left angle is curved on plan, then
stepped back twice. C19 shop fronts include those to Nos 16,
18 and 19 with each 2-light windows with turned mullion and
entablature, those 2 to left has brackets to cornices. Low
parapet with copings.
INTERIOR: retain original joinery and plasterwork including
some dogleg staircases with stick balusters and wreathed
handrails. 1983 List notes wall-paintings to No.12
ground-floor, front room representing landscapes of a very
high quality, c1835, one of them over fireplace, of a monastic
ruin which may represent Kirkstall Abbey, near Leeds
(currently covered in).
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: first-floor balconies to Nos 4 and 12
have individual balconies with rods embellished with lead
stars.
A good surviving example of artisan housing in the centre of
Cheltenham.
