Primary school and adjoining boundary wall and shelter. 1896, with mid C20 alterations. By WJ Hale. For the Sheffield School Board. Rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and gabled and hipped slate roofs topped with an elaborate octagonal wooden bell turret, 3 stages, with swept lead roof and finial. EXTERIOR: first floor band and sillband, coped gables of various forms. 2 storeys plus basement; 6 window range. Double depth plan. Main block has to right a cross-wing with stepped gable and finial. Large round-arched 4-light glazing bar window with keystone. Below, 3 glazing bar windows. To left, a 5 window range with the bays divided by buttresses, the central pair rising to the eaves and topped with gables and niches. Larger segment-headed central window flanked by 2 smaller windows. Above, 3 through-eaves dormers with coped gables and tall round-headed windows with transoms. On either side, single smaller windows. All these windows have glazing bars. Basement has 5 segment-headed arches. Left return has a hipped roof behind a flat topped gable. Elliptical arched 4-light window with voussoirs and hoodmould, and below, 3 glazing bar windows. Basement has a segmental arch. Beyond, to right, a set back entrance bay, 3 storeys, with a cross eaves dormer and below, a late C20 flat-roofed porch. To right, a single window on each floor. Hipped right return has mainly reglazed fenestration, with 4 first floor windows. Above, a through-eaves dormer with single plain sash and stepped gable with finial, flanked by single windows. Below, to right, a hexagonal single storey projection with swept coped parapet and 3 windows. To its left, 3 windows. Right return has an elliptical arched doorway with glazing bar fanlight, panelled double door, and transom inscribed "Infants". Above, a through-eaves dormer. To left, a single window on each floor. INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: at the rear, a stone boundary wall approx 3m high, with triangular stone coping. Adjoining open shelter has hipped slate roof and cast-iron posts. WJ Hale, 1862-1929, was a pupil of Innocent & Brown, architects of Sheffield's earliest board schools. He had his own practice in Sheffield from 1893, and designed a number of noteworthy schools and Nonconformist churches.
