EXEBRIDGE 13/42 Higher Somerhill Farmhouse
- - II Farmhouse. C16, refenestrated C19 and some internal alterations early C20. Roughcast over rubble and cob, thatched
roof, external stacks gable ends, rebuilt brick chimney right, roughcast left, roof continued as catslide over enlarged
lateral stack right of entrance with rebuilt brick chimney. Plan: 3-cell and cross passage, passage now blocked, stair
turret opening out of hall, outshot at rear, Two storeys, 1:2 bays, full height projecting chimney bay to right of
entrance, 2 and 3-light wooden casements, leaded light on right return of chimney bay, plank door with inserted light
and hooded thatched porch. Left return gable end first floor, Gothic window with divided tracery. Interior: former
kitchen to left of through passage is featureless, chamfered plank and muntin screen with depressed Tudor arch head,
chamfered beams with step and runout stops, C19 lintel to hall fireplace, bread oven, inner room with lateral beams,
possibly rebuilt; upper floor, stud and plant screen infill to one of 3 pairs of jointed crucks, one rising from floor
level. The farmhouse is shown as Higher Sourill on the 1822 Greewood map of Somerset. (VAG Report, unpublished SRO,
