1845-6 [Rainwaterheads with "HCH 1845 DN" and coronet in relief, Henry-Charles
Howard was 12th Duke of Norfolk. Date panel, however, has coronet in relief,
Norfolk monogram, and 1846. Not illustrated in view of "The Dairy" Swanbourne
by Fredk Mason, High Street, Arundel, of 1st December 1846]. Cottage orne.
Nodular flint of freak size, with galletting. Pulborough stone quoins plinth
and dressings. Pitched slate roof. Gable ends coped with ashlar. Pulborough
stone chimneys, with 5 square stacks, each with cornicing, placed on the diagonal
axes of a square plinth with battered and coved cornice.
1 storey and attics. North and south elevations have 3 bays, of which central
one breaks forward and is continued upward into exaggeratedly steep gable. North
elevation has door in central bay, with 2 moulded panels and 2 arched lights set
in 4-centred arch recessed into oblong panel. 1 mullioned window in chamfered
reveals in each flanking bay, with casements and glazing bars. Central gable
has coping which is returned horizontally at bottom and taken on kneelers. 1
casement window with glazing bars in chamfered reveals. 1 attic dormer over each
flanking bay: pitched slate roof with gable coping returned to horizontal at bottom
and taken on kneelers: Pulborough stone fronts, corbelled out slightly from wall
plane: casement windows, with glazing bars in chamfered reveals.
South elevation identical to north, except for ground floor openings. Door has
10 moulded panels, and is flanked by 2 windows with transoms and glazing bars
in chamfered reveals, hoodmould over all 3 openings, with grotesque label stops.
Flanking bays are canted with battered Pulborough stone roofs, battered sill courses,
and coved cornices, casement windows, those either side with transoms.
Identical 1-storey extensions to east an west. Pitched slate roofs. End gable
coping returned to horizontal at bottom and taken on kneelers. East and west
elevations have one 2-light mullioned window each with casements and glazing bars,
flanked by 2 single-light lancets, and with one single-light lancet in gable end
above, all with chamfered reveals. East extension has modern garage doors on
north elevation. West extension has 5-panelled bolt headed door in 3-centred
arch with chamfered reveals on north elevation. Both have 1 casement window each
with deep chamfered reveals on south elevation. The Home Farmhouse, farm buildings, pumping house and bridge form a group together
