Tower Works (Hardings), range of
buildings facing Globe Road
including offices) GV II Entrance range to Tower Works. 1864-66. Probably by Thomas
Shaw. For TR Harding. Ashlar and brick, some coloured, slate
roof, some replaced; modillion cornice, 2 brick stacks right.
1 storey and basement, carriage entrance flanked by 7 (left)
and 5 (right) round-headed windows, some blind, moulded
surrounds, red and blue brick arches with keyblocks.
Rock-faced ashlar plinth to window sill level, pierced to left
of arch by 4-centred arched windows; large rusticated round
arched entrance with keyblock and paired pilasters supporting
entablature, modillion cornice and blocking course; paired end
pilasters; moulded brick string at entablature level, 2
inserted windows far right.
Entrance passage: stone plinth, cement render incised in
imitation of ashlar; left: 5 steps up to round-arched doorway;
right: arch of equal height but steps down to basement
entrance, original door of 4 recessed panels, partly boarded
over. The entrance passage contains fine original gates: 2
leaves, each of 3 x 3 panels, the top panel centre with metal
decorative openwork motif representing steel pins with star
and monogram, TRH; strap hinges on inner face, small wicket in
right gate.
Rear, left: small square upper-floor windows, added 1-storey,
1-bay board room/office projects, it has a fine 6-pane bow
window and corbel table to eaves, contains probably original
panelling and corner safe, not seen in detail; right:
undergoing extensive alteration at time of review.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
The factory produced pins for wool, flax, cotton and silk
combing and for carding cloth. The firm's founder was
succeeded by his son, Colonel TR Harding, one of the foremost
Leeds philanthropists of his day, and the business continued
until 1978.
