KEMSING KEMSING 1. 5280 High Street (south side) TQ 5558 16/570 Nos 1 and 2 (Wybourne Cottages) II The entry shall be amended to read: House, subdivided into 2 cottages. Circa C15, remodelled in late C16 or early C17, extended and divided in C18 or Cl9 and restored in late C20. Timber-framed, partly rebuilt in brick and with some concrete block rebuilding. Hipped and gable-ended. Plain red tile roof. Brick gable end and axial stacks with brick shafts. Plan: Situated on a north-south axis the original circa C15 house is the west range comprising 3 timber-framed bays of which the 2 right hand (north) bays (no 1) were open to the roof, a Crown-post roof, the surviving Crown-post of which is not smoke blackened. The left hand (north) bay (no 2) might have been the service end and screens passage but this is conjectural. Probably in the late C16 or early C17 the 2 right hand bays were floored, possibly at the same time as the right hand (north) bay was extended at the front (east) with a fire- place on its left (south) side. The left hand (north) bay was altered, possibly in the late C17 and a shallow extension was built at the back containing a large stack. The left (south) bay of the original house was also extended at the front (east) and a single-storey outshut inserted between the 2 front (east) pro- jections at a later unknown date, possibly when the house was divided into 2 cottages. The outshut was heightened to 2 storeys in the late C20 when the house was extensively restored including the rebuilding of some of the walls and the removal and resetting of the roof structure. Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. The north front of No 1 has an asymmetrical 2 window elevation; rebuilt in red brick on the ground floor and close studding on the first floor; C20 2-light casements with glazing bars and central C20 plank door. C20 hipped former at centre. The right hand (west) elevation has Flemish bond brick on the ground floor with blue headers (the left hand section is stretcher bond brick) and close studding on the first floor, with plaster infilling and blocked 4-light window with hollow chamfered mullions. The gable to right projects and has some random bond brick on the ground floor and light scantling vertical studding above. The left hand (east) elevation is under a 3-span hipped roof with a small C20 hipped dormer in the central span; the first floor is tile-hung and the ground floor is red brick (partly in Flemish bond). An asymmetrical arrangement of C20 2-light casements and doorway to right of centre with a C20 panelled door and C20 open porch. To the left a C20 brick outshut. The rear (south) elevation brick ground floor and applied timber framing, to rendered concrete blocks above; asymmetrical fenestration of C20 2-light casements and C20 plank door to right with C20 open porch. Small tile-hung hipped dormer high up in roof to left. Interior: No 1: dividing the 2 bays a moulded ceiling beam with 2 rolls in a wide hollow chamfer and large hollow stops. Above this beam on the first floor a chamfered cambered tie-beam with curved brackets to the wall posts. The tie-beam supports an octagonal Crown-post with a moulded capital and base (2 rolls to the Capital and 1 to the base). The Crown-post has arched braces to the collar and collar purlin. The common rafters have been replaced. The left (south) side of the central bay has a moulded beam in the party wall of the 2 houses. The front (east) wing has a large brick fireplace with a Tudor arch timber lintel with recessed spandrels and rough unchamfered beams. It is now one room with that to the west the right hand bay of the original house which has chamfered ceiling beams with hollow step stops. No 2 has a large brick fireplace in the west wall with a rough timber lintel and an exposed mid-rail (now a ceiling beam) with mortices for diamond-section mullions. None of the original roof survives over No 2.

Tile hung 1st floor, brick ground floor, of C19. Square paned casements with external box shutters. 4-panel door under bracketed gabled hood. On right return close studded timber, with plaster filling, on 1st floor. Also original diagonal-mullioned window, now filled with plaster.
