Details
RICKINGHALL SUPERIOR THE STREET (SOUTH EAST TM 0475 SIDE) 6/156 Gable End and The Gables 29.7.55 (formerly listed as Gable End and Cottage adjoining Gable End) GV II House, now 2 dwellings. Early to mid C16, extended and remodelled mid to late C17, further extended and altered early C18, restored for the Suffolk Buildings Preservation Trust 1973. Timber frame, plastered with renewed panelled pargetting; some red brick additions. Steeply pitched plaintiled roofs with pantiles to rear. Originally 3 or more storeyed bays with a 2 bay parlour cross wing added to form a long 3 cell range with lobby and cross entrances, stair bay and short service wing added to rear. 2 storeys and attics. Triple gabled front. Ground floor: steps up to two 6 raised panelled doors with shaped brackets to moulded hoods, 5 flush moulded frame 16 pane sashes with hoodboards. First floor 5 flush moulded frame 3:6 pane sashes, hoodboards to those under 3 gables which are of different sizes, cusped and finialed bargeboards. C17 axial ridge stack towards right between hall and parlour, rebuilt cap. Left gable end is early C18 Flemish bond red brick with vitrified headers, plat band, moulded kneelers to shaped gable with lower convex and upper concave curves with steps between, pedimental head with an internal end stack. 2 bay return to right has 2 small C20 casements, rear gable end C20 casements. Lower stair bay behind main stack has a shallower pitch to gable. Main range to rear has some exposed C16 close studding with a break towards service end. To rear left an C18 brick service bay, pantiled, an extruded end stack with a rebuilt cap, inner segmental headed 3-light casement. Interior: hall has an arched brace to a chamfered cross axial binding beam, 1 removed, C16 large window sill, straight arched braces in close studded walling, C17 fireplace; C17 parlour has through tension bracing in frame, indented stop chamfered binding beams, an early C18 cyma moulded cornice. Staircase has some reused early C18 turned balusters. First floor hall chamber posts of rebated section, tie beam removed, edge halved scarf joints in wallplates, a splayed scarf joint in front plate where it meets C17 build; 3 panelled door to attic with a C17 clasped purlin roof in cross wing. The Gables not inspected.
