LONG MARTON, BRAMPTON, Ivy House

II

Former farmhouse, now house. Dated 1721, but C17 or earlier, remodelled and extended early C18, with further C20 alteration. Rubble sandstone with quoined corners and ashlar dressings, the stone painted on the rear elevation. Thatched roof now covered by corrugated sheeting, with gable and off-centre ridge stacks in red brick. Possible cross passage plan. FRONT (north-west) elevation; 3 bays, single storey with attics, with advanced and raised 2 storey offshut to right with shallow C20 roof. Off-centre doorway with panelled door, the upper part now with a single margin glazed light. 8 over 8 pane sash window in painted stone surround to left of door; small wedge dormer at eaves to right. Advanced offshut to right, with single 2-light window to ground floor, and 2, 2-light C20 casements above. REAR elevation; doorway with painted surround, the lintel dated 1721, and a 4-panelled door. Small fire window serving central hearth to left, and 2, 4-pane sashes within painted surrounds further left. Single, 2-light window within painted surround to right. Both end bays have tall half dormer windows, that to the left with small-paned glazing. Low, 4-paned window at eaves level to central bay. INTERIOR: not inspected, but said to retain evidence of cruck flaming. The original plan form is believed to be little disturbed, with plank and rail doors, substantial spine beams and joists, and other C18 and C19 fittings. Ivy House is a relatively unaltered example of the local C17 vernacular, which retains its early plan, and a significant level of interior fabric.
