THORNTON IN LONSDALE SD 67 SE 9/8 Halsteads 20.2.58 GV II
Formerly farmhouse, now house, c1670 with C18, C19 and C20 alterations. Rendered squared rubble, stone dressings, stone slate roof. Former c1670 L shaped plan, with early C18 left-hand extension and right-hand early C19 extension. 2 storeys, 7 bays. 4 bays towards centre are c1670. Formerly central entrance now altered to form a window, but strainer remains. To left is early C19 entrance with engaged pilasters and half glazed door; Doric porch with columns, entablature and pediment is also probably early C19, but apparently was not added until the early C20. 2 ground floor windows to left, altered mid-Cl9 to 'Tudor' 2-light chamfered mullioned windows with wooden round arches, mullions and spandrels; slate dripstones,2 pane casements and fixed lights. Between these 2 windows is a straight joint marking the C18 extension to left. 3 ground floor windows to right and 5 upper floor windows are all similar. Formerly central attic window is mid-C18 two light flat faced mullioned, casement and fixed light. 2 bays on far right project and are taller, and are an early C19 extension. Two 2-light windows per storey, hoodmoulds, sashes with glazing bars. Far left- hand weather wall to gable, and gable end stack. Stack to left and right of centre at former c1670 left-hand and right-hand gable, now junction with C18 and Cl9 extensions. Interior: central front room contains c1800 fireplace, probably reusing c1700 decorated mantle. 2 mid-C18 keyed segmental arches, fluted pilasters and 6 panel doors into rear kitchen wing. Early C18 dog-leg stairs, closed string, turned balusters, grip handrail. Roof trusses in C17 house have curved principals, collars and two with King blocks and curved braces, trenched purlins, all of c1670. The 1670 entrance surround is now incorporated in an outshut to the rear of a cottage, west of Halsteads (qv).
