Former Head Post Office) GV II Head post office, now offices. 1895-98. By Tanner of the
Office of Works. Rebuilt, apart from the facade, c1985.
Ashlar, with slate roof and various coped ashlar stacks, some
renewed. Renaissance Revival style.
Plinth, cornices, blocking course, coped gables. Windows,
reglazed, are mainly mullioned, with cross mullions on the
second floor. Stone mullions and transoms.
3 and 4 storeys plus attics; 17 windows, alternating 1/3. 4
blocks, giving an almost symmetrical facade.
Main block, 3 storeys plus attics, 3 bays, has 2 modillion
cornices and is divided by giant Ionic columns on pedestals.
Ground floor has 3 tall round arches containing a pedimented
doorcase with granite surround, flanked by plate glass
windows, all with fanlights. Above, 3 windows on each floor,
and above again, a pedimented dormer with side columns and a
cross-framed window. On each side, small pedimented dormers.
Projecting side bays have flat-headed doorways with small
triple windows over them. Above, regular fenestration and
large dormers.
Side blocks, 3 bays, have central round-arched doorways with
columns, flanked by flat-headed transomed windows. Above,
regular fenestration and 3 small dormers. Projecting end bays
have cross mullioned windows to the ground floor, and above,
regular fenestration and single dormers, the right bay with a
larger dormer.
To right, an additional bay, 3 windows, with cross mullioned
windows to each floor. Altered ground floor window to right. 3
large attic windows with segmental pediments.
End bay, to right, has a C20 entrance, and above, regular
fenestration and a large dormer.
To right, an additional block, 3 windows.
Only the facade of this former Post Office is of special
architectural interest.
