GV II
Public house. Dated 1904, with late C20 alterations. For John Smith's Brewery of Tadcaster. Red brick and ashlar, with granite, terracotta and ashlar dressings and slate roof with 2 coped gable stacks. Baroque Revival style. Ashlar ground floor, moulded sillbands. 3 storeys; 3 bays. Symmetrical front. Central Venetian window with plain sashes and double keystone. Below it, round-arched ashlar doorcase with shaped keystone and bulged granite columns, under segmental hood on enriched scroll brackets. Late C20 double doors and blank fanlight. On either side, a 2 storey bow window with shallow half-dome and on each floor a 5-light cross mullioned window. Second floor has bays divided by Ionic columns on scroll corbels and topped with ball finials above the cornice. Heavy dentilled cornice with breaks, and round arches to each bay. In each bay, a double plain sash with Gibbs surround and double keystone. Above the windows, a round-arched panel with lettering in relief, the central bay reading "Ball Inn rebuilt 1904", and the side bays "John Smith's Tadcaster Ales". INTERIOR refitted late C20.
