GV II

House. c1830, extended 1859. Probably designed by Woodhead & Hurst for the Duke of Norfolk. Dressed stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs with crowstepped gables with kneelers and finials. Single gable, single ridge and 4 lateral stacks. Tudor Revival style. EXTERIOR: chamfered plinth and quoins. 2 storeys plus attics; 4 window range. North entrance front has to right an external stack and a projecting 2-storey porch with arched doorway and double plank doors with ornate iron hinges. Over the door, a 3-light mullioned window with chamfered parapet. To left, a small fixed light on each floor and beyond a 2-light over a 3-light cross mullioned window, both with Tudor hoodmould. Above, a small wooden gabled dormer. To left again, another external stack with a 3-light cross mullioned window and above it an arched panel containing a shield with the arms of the Duke of Norfolk. To left again, a later single-storey wing with a C20 door and three 3-light cross mullioned windows. West front, 3 windows, has to left a slightly projecting gable with a 3-light cross mullioned window on each floor, with Tudor hoodmoulds, and in the gable peak a tiny lancet. To the right, a crenellated 2-storey canted bay window with 3-light cross mullioned windows. To right again, a small casement at the eaves and above it, a small stepped gable with a tiny lancet. South front, 4 windows, has to left a slightly projecting gable with a 32-light cross mullioned window and above it, a tiny lancet in the peak. Below, a doorway with sidelights and overlight under a Tudor hoodmould. To left again, a single 3-light mullioned window and below it, 2 similar windows. Beyond, a slightly projecting narrow gable with a 3-light cross mullioned window with Tudor hoodmould and above it, a tiny lancet in the peak. Below, a 2-light cross mullioned window. Beyond, to the right, a set back 2-storey service wing, 2 windows. Two 2-light mullioned windows and below, 2 similar windows and a 3-light one. To the south-east, a brick wall and a glazed link building attached to the late C19 coach house. Single storey. Pair of carriage doors flanked to left by 2 wooden cross casements and to right, a small door and a small cross casement. A further brick wall links this to the early C19 stable range. Single storey plus attics. 2-light casement flanked to left by 2 plank doors and to right by a similar door with overlight. Above, 2 gabled dormers each with a round-headed through eaves loft door. Beyond, to the left, a single storey wing with a plank door and a 2-light casement. The south side of the stable courtyard is bounded by a wall with gate piers. INTERIOR: main rooms on ground floor have late C19 marble fireplaces.
