Formerly known as: Nos.20 AND 22 KING STREET. House and shop. C16, early C18 and C20 shop. Plastered timber frame and brick with slate roof, long narrow plan with corner frontage to King Street where the street is reduced in width, extends back making E side of the alley from adjacent carriageway (qv). 3 storeys. E elevation: 3 window range, early C18 red brickwork with burnt headers, moulded wooden cornice. Windows are flush and have moulded architraves, good voussoirs with keystones. First floor windows are of double casements with glazing bars, 2x3 panes. Second floor windows sashes, 3x4 panes. Band between storeys. Ground floor C20 shop totally of plate glass. S end elevation: gabled, plastered timber framing. First floor has C19 pargetted panels with combed decoration. Ground floor, shop front continued round from E front. At W end, 2-leaved panelled door to No.20A. W side elevation: long range along alley of 3 units. Adjacent to carriageway, ground floor brick with C20 fixed window, above, rendered framing, first floor C18 window with moulded architrave, now with casement, 2x4 panes, second floor, sash window 3x4 panes. To N, long 3 window range, timber-framed and plastered, second floor jettied, board between ground and first floor marks position of lower jetty, now underbuilt. First floor window C18 frames, sashes, 3x4 panes, second floor C20 top-opening casements. Rear unit, plain 3 storeyed, rendered block, wall cranks away from alley with single second floor C20 window. N end elevation: tall, narrow, 3 storeyed and gabled, in rendered brick, fire escape stair in front. Ground floor, segment headed doorway with plain C20 door, adjacent segment headed window of double sashes, each 3x2 panes, iron grille. First floor, segment headed combined C20 door and window. Second floor door with 3x3 paned upper glazing. INTERIOR: features rebuilt or masked. The jettied middle range to the carriageway alley has the shape of a large domestic range typical of medieval inns, as is the carriageway itself. Nos 20 (qv), 20A, with the carriageway and No.26 (qv) have the shape of a large medieval inn.
