Sykehouse with attached
Outbuildings 22.05.1990 II House with attached outbuildings, formerly farmhouse with attached outbuildings and metalworkers forge. c.1800, with near-contemporary additions, and later C19 extension, further altered and refurbished in 1998. Coursed squared and rubble sandstone with quoins, single brick stack to house gable, and Welsh slate and stone slate roof coverings.
PLAN: Linear complex on sloping site, aligned north-east to south-west, with original single cell house part to upper end, former stable/ cowhouse to centre, and former forge to lower end.
FRONT ELEVATION: 2 storeyed part with original entrance within massive stone surround, with former 3-light flush mullioned window to the left, now with C20 casements. Above, 2 light window raised to break eaves, and now with flat roof. Former outbuilding to centre, with 2 doorways at different levels, both with monolithic surrounds, now with C20 half-glazed doors. To the right, single storeyed former metalworkers forge, with doorway to left, and 3-light flush mullioned window to right. Further right, lower outbuilding with lean-to against gable.
INTERIOR: Much remodelled, but with former metalworkers forge with mullioned windows to 3 walls, and 2 former hand forge hearths retained within present kitchen area.
HISTORY: The rural economy of areas of South Yorkshire and North -East Derbyshire surrounding Sheffield was characterised in the C18 and C19 Sheffield by a mixture of agriculture and metal working carried out on the same site. This example, with extant hearths surviving in an architecturally distinctive workshop is a rare survival. Listing NGR: SK2834189851
