GV II

Pair of attached houses. 1846. Limestone ashlar with external and party wall stacks, roof not visible. Double-depth plan. Tudor Gothic Revival style. Each of 2 storeys, basement and attic; 2-window range. A detailed, symmetrical front has projecting wings with small gables and octagonal, panelled buttress-turrets with octagonal finials; weathered sill bands, a moulded parapet, paired buttresses to the party wall linked by a raised parapet, and side entrances. Windows have stone mullions and transoms with tall lower windows, to metal casements: shallow, canted outer bays with 4 and flanking 2 lights and blind tracery panelled parapets; above are smaller canted 3-light bays with weathered heads. The rest are 3-light windows with raised hollow drip moulds, without transoms to the attic. The right return has a c1970 concrete porch. The left return has an open porch with unglazed windows and panelled parapet with a corner finial to a good restored 2-leaf half-glazed door with linenfold panels, C20 stained-glass windows with crocketed ogee heads, and a 2-light overlight; a left-hand gabled wing as the front but with corbelled octagonal finials to the attic, and right-hand external stack. Good linked octagonal stacks have cornices. INTERIOR: No.7 has tiled entrance hall with a Gothic cornice of quatrefoils, Tudor arch to the now-removed stair, 6-panel doors with panelled reveals, and shutters. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached spear-headed railings to front and side basement areas, and front garden railings, gates, piers and a good balustrade to No.9 of cusped circles. A similar composition to Nos 6 & 7 (qv), though more richly decorated. (Gomme A, Jenner M and Little B: Bristol, An Architectural History: Bristol: 1979-: 285; Mowl T: To Build The Second City: Bristol: 1991-: 164).
