Country House, late C17 or early C18 origins, refronted and
extended c1820 and rear and interiors much altered 1921. Ashlar
fronted with stone tiled roofs and large corniced ashlar stacks. 3
and 2-storeys. Long south front with 3-storey centre, possibly
late C17 refronted, 3-window range. Upper floor with canted
corners and diagonal stacks, 3 coped gables and 12-pane sashes,
first floor with mid C18 moulded cornice over three 12-pane sashes
in moulded architraves and ground floor early C19 Greek Doric porch
with 4 pairs of columns, pilaster responds and 12-pane sash each
side of central double doors. To each side early C19 wings, 3-
window range of 12-pane sashes, longer to ground floor and with
moulded architraves. Parapet and moulded first floor band.
Projecting wings at each end with urns on parapet corners and 2-
storey bows with tripartite 4-12-4 upper windows and similar French
windows below. West and east fronts partly early C19, mostly of
c1921, as also the facades to rear court. Rear front dated 1921
A.H.R. for Sir Alfred Reed. Attached at east side a large late C19
water tower, 3 stages with flat parapet and corner urns. To north
of west range a screen wall with broken pedimented archway and ball
finial. To north of east range, pair of stone gatepiers to service
court.
Interiors: main rooms remodelled in early C18 style, probably
c1921. House was owned by the Wallis family in early C18, the
Methuen family in later c18, J. Clements c1800, W. Tonge 1807-27,
J. C. Boode 1827-70, and the Walmesley family 1870-1918. The major
extensions may date from after 1827.
