Farmhouse, latterly 3 cottages. Circa 1500, altered in the early to mid - C17. Late
C20 alterations. Coursed sandstone rubble with some cob to left-hand end, rendered
to left-hand gable end and rear. Gable-ended corrugated-asbestos roof. Coursed
rubble stacks with weatherings, 2 rendered and left-hand end stack with later brick
top.
Plan and development: Three-room and through-or-cross-passage plan, facing south;
ground falls to left. Late-Medieval open hall house, consisting of hall with inner
room to right (present kitchen) and cross passage with service room beyond to left.
Formerly open to the roof, continuously from end to end with rooms probably divided
by low screens. C17 alterations included insertion of the first floor and
substantial dividing walls, and insertion of stacks, including axial hall stack
backing onto the cross passage and end stacks to inner room and service room. Winder
staircase inserted to the rear of the service-end stack probably at the same time.
Eaves raised over hall and inner room section of house probably at the time of the
insertion of the floor but possibly slightly later, and lean-to scullery added to
rear of the inner room, probably when the inner room became the kitchen, possibly
also in the C17 or later. Dog-leg staircase inserted in the front left-hand corner
of the hall probably in the mid - to late C19 when the house was divided. Bathroom
formed from the rear of the cross passage and part of the left hand room, probably in
the mid - to late C20. Porch added to front of right-hand end of house in late C20.
Two storeys.
Exterior: Roughly-symmetrical front with 4 windows to first floor and 3 to ground
floor; late C19 two- and 3-light wooden casements with roughly-chamfered wooden
lintels. Wide boarded cross-passage door between first and second windows front left
with 5-part rectangular overlight and wooden lintel. C20 half-glazed door with
wooden lintel to far right; late C20 rendered hipped slate-roofed porch with half-
glazed door to left-hand end of front. Wide raking buttress to left of left-hand
ground-floor window and to left-hand gable end, probably C19 additions. Straight
joint in masonry of front and rear walls, probably indicating phases in the
rebuilding of former cob walls.
Interior: Hall has chamfered cross beam and 2 chamfered half beams, with scroll stops
to rear and carved runout stops with bays to front. Blocked fireplace. C17
straight-sided chamfered-arched doorway with pegged frame, between hall and cross
passage. Left-hand ground-floor room (former service room) has chamfered spine beam
with runout stops, blocked fireplace and oak winder stair to rear of stack. Right-
hand ground-floor room (present kitchen) has chamfered spine beam with straight-cut
stops.
Remains of late-Medieval smoke-blackened roof including 2 trusses, probably jointed
crucks, one over service room and one over lower (left-hand) end of hall. Each truss
with cambered collar, mortice and tenoned apex with V-shaped notch for former
diagonally-set ridge-piece and pairs of trenched purlins. Smoke-blackened lower
purlins over hall section and the lower sections of some smoke-blackened rafters
survive too. Probably C17 cob dividing hall between hall and upper room, rising up
into roofspace, without smoke-blackening. Late C20 roof structure above old roof.
