Monument. Dated 1890 with founder's mark Monumental Bronze Co. Bridgeport Connecticut USA. Bronze, painted to resemble Portland stone. Free Baroque style. Tapered pedestal approx 2m high with rock-faced plinth, pedimented base, tapered shaft and elaborate cornice had low relief capitals WATSON on base. Segmental-headed panels on shaft have inscriptions and mottoes. West, "To the memory of Robert Watson born Hamsterley 8 January 1819 died Bishop Auckland 9 May 1891". South, "Be honest to thy God the world thy country thy fellowship and thyself". East, "God has revealed Himself in nature, of which science is the interpreter". North, "With charity to all an honest man is the noblest work of God".
