TG 10 SE HETHERSETT CANTLEY LANE 5/31 Cantley House
2-10-51 (previously listed
as Cantley Farmhouse) II House, formerly farmhouse, C16 and C17, colourwashed brick, pantile roof.
C16 2-cell cross wing of 2 storeys and attic to right, C17 range attached
to left of 5 bays, 2 storeys and attic. C19 single storeyed lofted range
to left. Principal facade to north west: C17 range in English bond with
plinth and platband; crowstepped gable with internal stack to left; all
windows renewed c.1980 with C17-style cross windows having wrought iron
casements and hinges, 4 openings to ground floor with segmental arches, 5
to first floor; doorway to left with renewed flat ogee headed door with
decorative strap hinges from Burgh Hall near Aylsham. C16 timber framed
cross wing to right refaced C19 in brick in Flemish bond; bargeboards; ground
and first floor windows to match C17 range, that to ground floor with flat
arch, that to first floor with cambered arch; opening to attic as to first
floor but no transom. Right return of cross wing: 2 bays with central chimney
bay, and axial stack. Central doorway enclosed within gabled porch having
barge boards and drop finial, doorway and door to match main facade; porch
return with C19 Gothick ogee headed lancets from Burgh Hall. Ground floor
openings similar to south-west facade, first floor openings similar to attics.
Rear: C16 cross wing forward to left, openings with cambered arches, windows
similar to south-west facade, ground floor with 3-lights. C17 range with
central doorway, all windows similar to south-west facade, 2 small 2-light
openings to ground and first floor with segmental arches to ground floor
and older arches to first floor, 2 single inserted lights to first floor
centre. Large gabled dormer with 2-light casement to right. C18 range to
north-east: single storey and loft, colourwashed brick, dentil cornice; front
now with door to right and 2 2-light openings as to main facade; rear with
3 similar openings. Interior: C16 cross wing with large central stack, fire-
place to front room with bressumer and rear bread oven, fireplaces to rear
room and first floor with chamfered 4-centred flat arches in brick. Front
room bridging and stack beams with lambs tongue chamfer stops, timber studs
to partition wall to C17 rear room with moulding to beams with lambs tongue
chamfer stops. First floor with quarter moulded ring frame and bridging
beam. Attic with collars and clasped purlins, arched braces to rear cell.
C17 range with later partitions, 3 tie beams with some stops. 3-tiered roof
with tennoned butt purlins, thick collars. Timber framed dormer to rear.
The house and farmstead are the only-remaining settlement of the former
parish of Cantelose.
