8/3 Groom's Cottage at Ashcombe Tower -

GV II

Groom's Cottage at the entrance to the drive to Ashcombe Tower (q.v.). Designed by Brian O'Rorke and contemporary with Ashcombe Tower, designed 1933-6. Stone rubble, whitewashed and rendered with rusticated stone quoins, similar to those at Ashcombe Tower ; thatched roof, half-hipped at ends ; central axial stack with rusticated stone shaft. Free Vernacular Revival style, similar to the exterior of the house. Plan: 2 rooms wide wih a central entrance and rear service rooms in an outshut. Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-bay front with a central front door with rusticated jambs and a flat porch canopy on brackets. 2-light casement windows with glazing bars, one on either side of the door and one first floor window above. Interior: Not inspected. The cottage is part of a stable yard which originally included garages and petrol pumps. The yard buildings were all thatched, the Groom's Cottage is the only surviving thatched building in the group.
