PATRINGTON ENHOLMES TA 32 SW 7/36 Cattle house range approximately 20 metres 1-10-86 south of engine house/granary range at Enholmes Farm GV II
Cattle house. 1849, for William Marshall; C20 alterations. Orange-brown brick with orange rubbed-brick dressings. Pantile roof, apart from west range with asbestos roof. Rectangular on plan: series of 5 parallel ranges divided by passages and linked by range along north side; forms centrepiece of farmyard. Single storey. Plinth, largely rendered. North side, of 9 bays: 6 segmental-headed entrances with sliding board doors, single segmental-headed window to right end, single windows to centre and left, the latter beneath a timber lintel. Hipped roof with projecting gables of ranges to rear. West side, of 14 bays: round-headed entrance with sliding door, flanked by part-glazed board doors with strap hinges (6 doors to left, 7 to right) beneath segmental arches; 2 rows of pipe breathers. East side, of 10 bays: central recessed bay with wide blocked segmental-headed opening and inserted window, flanked by 3 segmental-headed openings to each side (5 with lower sections blocked), board door to right beneath timber lintel, and pair of segmental-headed windows to left. South side: 5 ranges, separated by passages, each with a central round-headed gable-end entrance with sliding doors; inserted door and window to right (east) range. Central range has ll-bay arcades to each side with central pairs of square brick piers flanked by cylindrical piers, and C20 breeze-block infilling with inserted doors. Outermost east and west ranges have similar 13-bay arcades with earlier brick infilling, board doors and overlights. Inner ranges each have 14 original board doors with overlights to each side, some reset. Overhanging eaves, hipped roofs throughout. The cattle houses, considered very advanced when built, housed individual animals in boxes measuring lOft by 12ft, each with a water trough and manger, and served by railways along central aisles. Converted to pig units c1960, but still retaining their original form. Railway lines removed or covered by later floor. Disused and in disrepair at time of resurvey.
