6/75 The Coach and Horses Public House - 10.7.57 GV II

Public house. Circa late C18 extended circa early C19 and circa early or mid C20. Dressed and faced granite brought to course with dressed granite quoins, sills, jambstones, lintels and 1st floor sill string. Slurried scantle slate roof with lower pitched outshut at rear. Rendered brick chimneys over gable ends and over left of middle cross wall (originally gable end). Ungrouted scantle slate hipped roof over rear wing with 2 large rendered axial stacks. Plan: original part has 2 nearly equal front rooms originally with cross passage between, (now 1 room), the right hand room slightly wider, plus shallow service rooms behind in possibly integral outshut; extended at the left end by addition of 2 rooms wide plan probably originally for stables and accommodation and in the circa early- mid C20 with large double depth wing at right angles to the rear of right hand end. 2 storeys. Overall 7 window front, the original nearly symmetrical 5 window front on the right and C19 2 window rendered front on the left. The original front is virtually unaltered. Slightly left of middle doorway with distyle Tuscan wooden porch, glazed in the C20, and 16-pane hornless sashes, possibly original or early-mid C19. The left hand part has 3 ground floor doorways with windows between the central window was probably originally a doorway leading to rear courtyard and between 2 similarly front cottages. C20 windows and doors. Behind this part is a lean-to with a round-on-plan chimney. The rear wing is slate hung and has original 16-pane sashes. Interior : much altered in the C20 but retains 2 original granite gable end fireplaces, 1 at either end. The left hand fireplace has a circa early C19 granite milestone built in as a lintel under the original lintel. The milestone is inscribed FROM HELSTON 1.
