(Formerly listed as Phillips Auction Rooms, FOUNTAIN STREET) 30.4.82

GV II Former Ebenezer Methodist Church, auction rooms (at time of listing) later converted into apartments. 1885. Fine quality ashlar to front, hammer-dressed stone to sides and rear, Welsh blue-slate roof. Italianate Classical style.

Two tall storeys raised on a basement. Five bay symmetrical facade. Pedestal height string course, sill course and impost string. The centre three bays, approached by a flight of stone steps, has giant Corinthian engaged tetrastyle portico, deep entablature and bracketed triangular pediment the tympanum with oculus, finial to apex. Bays two and four have archivolted arched doorways, foliate carving to impost string and keystones. Central window in same style. Archivolted arched windows above. Outer bays have coupled shafted archivolted arched windows to each floor; entablature surmounted by shaped pediments. Left-hand return has seven bays of two-light windows with arched lights, engaged Doric column mullions and sill bands. Right-hand return has plain two-light windows with arched lights.
