5.6.68 Church of St. Wilfrid GV I
Church. C12 chancel arch, otherwise late C15-early C16, C19 renovation and
additions by G. F. Bodley, major renovation 1985. Ashlar limestone, Welsh slate
and sheet-metal roofs. West tower, 2-bay aisled nave with south porch, 2-bay
aisled chancel with north vestry. Perpendicular style; embattled parapets with
renewed crocketed pinnacles. West tower: chamfered plinth and moulded band,
diagonal offset buttresses. 3-light west window displaced to left by internal
stair turret. Clock beneath 2-light belfry openings with renewed, uncusped
tracery. String course with gargoyles, saddle-back roof behind parapet.
Nave: south porch to left in angle with aisle has transverse arches, ashlar roof
and coped gable with cross. South aisle has panelled buttresses between 4-light
windows with Tudor-arched lights. Moulded, round-arched north doorway with square-
headed windows on its left having ogee-headed lights. 2-light clerestorey window
interrupted by aisle roof. Chancel: south chapel door has moulded jambs and arched
lintel, otherwise as aisle. C19 north vestry, chancel clerestorey has 3-light
and 2-light windows with Tudor-arched lights. 3-light east window with cusped lights
and square head, hoodmould with face-carved stops; flanking panelled buttresses
with beyond, south chapel window of 3 Tudor-arched lights and cusped, 2-light north
chapel window with hoodmould. Peaked parapet with east cross. Interior: double-chamfered tower arch. 2-bay north arcade with octagonal pier to
double-chamfered arches, mid C16; wider single arch to south-aisle springs from
brackets, early C16. Mid C12 chancel arch with shafts to the west responds, decorated
abaci and voussoirs with barrel moulding and zig-zag ornament. Chapel arcades each
with octagonal pier and arches of 2, hollow-chamfered orders. Newly-gilded and
painted panels to chancel roof. Cylindrical font with floral frieze, C12. Fine
monuments, fitments and extensive collection of sculpture removed for conservation
