Said to be of mediaeval origins, the manor given to Keynsham Abbey circa
1330 (see Verey/Pevsner "Buildings of England). C16 and C17 with C18 alterations
and C19 kitchen wing addition. Built of pennant stone rubble with slate
roofs. Consists of main block, square on plan and wing running eastwards
to church tower. Two storeys, basement and attics in gables. Three storey
wing, 5 storey octagonal turret with cupole in angle of main block and
wing. Entrance elevation faces east and has 2 gables with moulded copings
and pierced finials (one lost). Two windows, 3 and 4-light stone mullioned
and transomed casements, 2-light to attics, weathered string at first floor
level, dripmoulds to other windows. Large conical rainwater head to left
dated 1773 and a box-shaped one below (also dated 1773). Large gabled C19
porch to right hand with Tudor arch doorway and 'Tudor-Gothick' decoration.
Two-light stone mullioned casements to turret which has modillion eaves
cornice and mid-C19 gargoyles at each angle. Left hand return elevation
has gable with finial, 3-light casement in gable face, 3 C18 sashes with
glazing bars in architraves to first floor, later bay to ground floor
with 4-light mullioned and transomed window. South-east corner has garderobe
projection with 2-light window. Rear of main block has 3 gables, irregular
casement windows 2 and 3-light in attics with mullions, 3 and 4-light with
mullions and transoms below. Projecting late Victorian or early C20 modern
wing on Doric arches and with 3 hipped gables (centre recessed), extends
forward at ground and basement floor levels. Two projecting chimney breasts
one with tall diagonal shafts and one with 3 tall square shafts. The east
wing has modillion cornice and parapet and C18 fenestration, 5 windows,
later sashes in architraves with moulded cornices over. Double 4-centred
archway to ground floor centre leading to entrance gates, square head architrave
door opening to right. Central window on 2nd floor has arched niche on
each side. Bowling green terrace to south. North front of latter wing
has 4 centred doorway to left with relieving arch and C17 panelled doors,
one range of tripartite windows over, Venetian on 1st floor (sides blank)
Venetian-variation on 2nd floor (blank arched sides, flat headed centre
light). Modillion cornice and ramped parapet. Projecting lateral chimney
to right of entrance, C19 oriel to right of that.
Interior: C16 oak panelling to dining room, moulded depressed arch stone
fireplace, oak screen. Room to west of archway has later C18 fireplace
with narrow fluted Corinthian columns.
