LONGBURTON
ST 61 SW LONGBURTON VILLAGE 2/97 Longburton House
11.7.51 - II House in grounds. 1908-9 by M H Baillie Scott for Mr Edward Bartlett,
incorporating a considerable quantity of old materials from demolished
buildings in the locality. Stonework from Yetminster, Stoke-sub-Hamdon,
Martock, Tintinhull. Coursed rubble-stone walls with ashlar quoins. Stone
slate roof with stonegable-copings to main ridges and dormers, with moulded
kneelers. Stone stacks, on back wall of south range, west of entrance porch
with projecting embrasure; at centre of south ridge, and on north ridge (original
kitchen). Wodden bellcote on roof over entrance hall. L-plan house, with
reception rooms in south range, and originally extensive services in the north
range. Front entrance in the angle. South elevation: 1½ storeys. 4 windows
and a south porch left of centre. Windows have hollow-chamfered stone mullions
with metal casements and lead lights, from left to right: 4-light, converted to
French window, 7-light, with transom and cill-lowering a later alteration,
5-light. 2 gabled dormers over each of 3 lights, at east end. Gabled south
porch, of 2 storeys, has an entrance with moulded jambs and depressed-arch head.
Plank-and-muntin door. Sundial over entrance, dated I.G.E. 1700 came from
Pennard Hill. The east elevation of 5 windows has irregular gabling. 5 windows,
mullioned. Entrance porch in the angle, one storey with a square parapet,
entrance with a depressed-arch head. Plank door. West side of service range,
has a small staircase tower at centre left, and a projecting dairy (originally)
at north-west corner. Interior: Drawing room has full complement of C17 squared
moulded panelling from Old Court Farm, Batcombe. Open fireplace with straight-
chamfered jambs and lintel. Breakfast-room has ceiling-beams in 12 compartments
and a cored-and-timbered cornice at north end of room, coring by Baillie Scott.
Hall has C16 linenfold panelling. Staircase, C20, in Queen Anne style.
