Details

BRADNINCH ST 00 SW 8/1 Nos 1 & 2 Bathaies - - II 2 cottages, originally a single farmhouse. C17 with later alterations. Cob, stone plinth, plastered, under gabled-end and half-hipped slate roofs. Formerly probably a 2 or 3-room, through-passage plan with 2 rear wings, both of which retain old work. External newel staircase in angle formed by main range and right-hand wing (which is the older of the 2 wings). Left-hand end stack; axial stack to the right of, and backing on to, the through-passage; end stack to right-hand wing, lateral stack to inner face of left-hand wing; all with brick shafts. 2 storey throughout. Front: 3 window range, upper windows all of 3 lights with old frames, that to the left with C20 1-pane casements, the others with C19 casements with glazing bars; two 3-light casement windows below, and 2 doorways, that on the right giving in to the passage. Right-hand wing, roof ridge much lower than main range; 2 ground- floor windows, one (of 2 lights) with C17 chamfered timber frame and mullion, the other with chamfered frame. One 3-light window to 1st floor with C19 frame. C20 2-light window to rear end. The other wing, roof ridge at same level as that of main range, with one 4-light C18 or early C19 frame; the other 4 windows with C20 casements. Newel, squared externally with small 2-light window, jambs and mullions chamfered. Interior: to No. 1 (the right-hand cottage). Several C17 door frames survive, that to the Hall from the passage with a chamfered stone surround; chamfered timber lintels and frames to rear door of Hall (to wing) and to 2 upstairs doors. 3 planked doors (possibly C18 or earlier survive). 3 cross beams to Hall, chamfered with hollow step stops. Fireplace has stone jambs and timber lintel with ovolo mouldings. 3 unstopped chamfered beams to right-hand wing. Roof ceiled and not inspected. Large end fireplace, and chamfered beams survive in No. 2 (not inspected internally). C19 iron pump in rear yard of No. 1.
