Monument, dated 1884, to John Vaughan, by G.A. Lawson. Bronze figure and
tablets; roughly dressed ironstone pedestal and plinth. Standing male
figure with coat draped over left arm, on shallow pedestal and deep
slightly-tapered plinth. Relief-sculptured tablet in each face of pedestal
depicting: ironstone mine, ironworks, iron-rolling mill, and railway.
Renewed tablet on north face of plinth inscribed: "JOHN VAUGHAN 1799-1868.
MAYOR OF MIDDLESBROUGH 1855. DISCOVERED IRONSTONE IN THE CLEVELAND HILLS.
FOUNDER OF THE IRON TRADE IN CLEVELAND. PARTNER IN BOLCKOW, VAUGHAN & CO.
LTD., WHO BUILT ONE OF THE FIRST IRON WORKS IN MIDDLESBROUGH IN 1840".
Originally sited in Exchange Place; moved here 1914. Included for historic
interest.
