HULME WALFIELD C.P. GIANTSWOOD LANE SJ 86 NW 1/32 Church of St Michael - - II
Church. 1855-86. By Sir George Gilbert Scott. Snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and a C20 pantile roof. Decorated. Nave, with northern aisle, chancel, north western porch, south eastern vestry and north eastern organ chamber. Nave, northern face: of 4 bays with a projecting plinth common to the whole building. Gabled projecting porch to the second bay from right which has columns to either side and a moulded archway with a hood mould and label stops. Further pilarettes to the corners of the porch and a trefoil to the gable with foliate infill. Stone cross to the apex of the gable which has ashlar springers and coping. The porch has stone benches to either side and deeply chamfered window embrasures with a scissor-beam roof, and the moulded door surround. To either side are 3 windows with geometrical tracery, each of 2 lights with trefoil heads to the lights and encircled quatrefoils to the apex. The heads of these windows project up into gabled dormers which have ashlar coping. Behind the aisle roof is a short piece of nave walling which has no openings. To the eastern gable-end of the nave is a bellcote with two openings, one of which contains a bell. The western end has a 2-light window with trefoil heads and 4 dagger ornaments to the apex. All the masonry is tooled vertically. At left of this is a 2-light window to the end of the nave which has a trefoil to the apex and a hood mould with label stops. The southern side has 4 bays of 2-light form with trefoil heads to each light and quatrefoils to the apexes. The chancel has to its southern side a lean-to at left which has an arched window with trefoil light above it. To the right of this is a 2-light window with a cinquefoil to the apex. The eastern window is of 3 lights and has trefoil heads and encircled trefoils to the apex. Camopied niche above in the gable. The northern side has the organ chamber at right with 2 lancet lights and at left of this a 2-light window with trefoil heads to the lights and a cinquefoil to the apex. Interior: The nave has a northern arcade of 4 aisles with circular piers supporting foliate capitals and a continuous hood mould above with foliate and figurehead label stops. Corbel table to the top of the wall with chamfered corbels which support ashlar posts to the eaves. Richly moulded chancel-arch font of C16 date with octagonal body and blind tracery to the sides.
