GV II

House and wall adjoining to right. Dated 1856 and 1858. By JJ Rowland for Thomas Packer Walter Butt. Ashlar over brick with stone tile roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 3 bays with single-storey entrance porch at right and 2-lower-storey range to rear. Central narrow bay is set back and surmounted by pierced quatrefoil parapet. Outer 2 gabled bays have 2-storey stepped canted bay windows. Mainly mullion-and-transom fixed-light and casement windows, those to bays have 3 lights with single lights to sides; ground-floor central window of 2-lights and 2-light mullion window above with 1/1 sashes. 2 first-floor bands, embellished apron under central first-floor window. Octagonal side pinnacles to gables and circular motif in gable. Entrance porch: pointed arch with column clusters and moulding to head surmounted by pierced parapet. Tall octagonal lateral and ridge stacks with cornices. Coped verges with pinnacles. Irregular design with similar features to other facades, and set-back broached 3-stage octagonal tower (formerly with spire) to east, upper facets enriched with heraldry. Range to rear. INTERIOR: 1983 List describes this as good, containing some C16 and C17 panelling reputed to come from Arle Manor (when it was partially demolished in 1880). Hall has top-lit gallery. Excellent wooden staircase with French historical figures carved in wood. North-east ground floor room has polychromatic panelled ceiling, carved panelling and fine chimney piece; north-west room has more (partly C17 figurative) panelling and a fine carved chimney piece. Splendid billiard room added to north-west in 1865 with side alcoves etc. Back stairs of unusual design in north-west domestic extension. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: low wall abuts porch to right and has pierced lozenge-motif balustrade with shaped copings. All the listed buildings at Arle Court form a good group.
