School. 1879-82 by Aaron Twyman, built by W.W. Martin. Salmon pink
brick and terracotta with plain tiled roof. Built as 2 huge blocks with
central tower ensemble. The northern block of 3 storeys and basement,
with 2 gables to left and to right, with tower and turret between the 2
later. Central range broken into 6 bays by full height buttresses projecting
as pinnacles over parapet. Stacks to left and to right. Large paired
segmental windows on 2nd floor in central portion, groups of 4, 5 or 6
lancets in each bay on 1st floor, and paired segmental lights on ground
floor and paired lights to basement. Moulded arched gateway to left,
and smaller pedestrian arch to right (in gabled projections) the latter
with bay window and balcony over, offset to right and to left. Southern
block of 6 bays and end gables, with similar but more regular fenestration,
with traceried windows on 2nd floor. Fleur-de-lys rails to Area. Rear
elevation: similar treatment, with less crowded fenestration, and with
the central block more-clearly distinguished, of 2 storeys and attic and
domestic in appearance, with gable to left with stack, dormer to right,
tripartite sashes on 1st floor, and canted bay and segmentally headed
windows on ground floor. The school buildings particularly the northern
block, contain a chapel, work-shops, laboratories, gymnasium, laundry,
sanatorium and hall as well as teaching and residential facilities. A
contemporary wrote in praise of the plumbing ("a perfectly drained
establishment") and the 4 miles of hot water pipes. The school was founded
on the site in 1809. (See Busson, 68; see also Royal Ramsgate, 1897 p.46).
