GV II

Building of uncertain purpose, now part of hotel. C15, extended in C16 and C19, altered in C20. Timber framed, plastered with some exposed framing, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 4-bay range with axis at right angles to street, reduced to 3 bays at rear. C16 2-bay wing to rear, and C19 extension beyond with slate roof. Late C19 open shed beyond, roofed with slate and corrugated iron. 2 storeys (except last item). Ground floor, one C19 fixed light of 15 panes, probably former shop window, with moulded fascia. First floor, one early C19 sash of 16 lights. Late C16 feature gable, formerly projecting, now set back almost flush with the wall below. Much replacement re-used timber in front elevation, with C20 pegs projecting. Bracketed lamp similar to that on no. 11 (item 9/137, q.v.), introduced. Underbuilt jetty, jetty plate missing. 3 chamfered binding beams, unstopped, without mortices for former partitions below, and plain joists of horizontal section. 4 grown knees introduced in C20. The wing to rear has plain joists of horizontal section arranged laterally, 2 more grown knees and an axial beam introduced in C20. The first floor of both is wholly plastered; roofs inaccessible at time of survey. Known as The True Blue Inn in 1758 (G.F. Beaumont, A History of Coggeshall in Essex, 1890, 233). RCHM 77.
