SU 73 SW NEWTON VALENCE NEWTON VALENCE 5/16 The Manor House, and The Old Manor (Formerly listed as 31.7.63 The Manor House) GV II

A house of many phases, now 2 dwellings. C17, C18 early and late C19. The oldest part has walls of rubble malmstone, with a high plinth, but its east side has an early C19 brick parapet, brick quoins: the west wall is malmstone ashlar of 3 phases, with brick dressings, the east wall is of brickwork in English bond, with a 1st floor band, stepped plinth. The middle part of the block has late Tudor features with very thick walls, and includes some massive timber framing and a large chimney breast; from it extends a long north-south block (C17 and C18), which has a regular west front of 2 storeys and attic, 5 windows. Steep slate roof. C18 and early C19 sashes. ½-octagonal malmstone porch. The northern part is an addition of the early C19, placed at a slight angle. Yellow brick walls in Flemish bond with rubbed flat arches, plinth, stone cills. Low-pitched hipped slate roof with a deep dentilled cornice. The main east facade is symmetrical of 2 storeys 5 windows. Sashes in reveals, the ground-floor windows reaching to floor level (and formerly opening onto a verandah). The north end is a ½ hexagon, continuing the style. The west side of this northern unit has been remodelled in the late C19, with an irregular plan, similar walling, casements. The doorway is a reused early C19 case, with an open pediment on carved brackets, arched opening with fanlight, and 6- panelled door. Interior: the northern unit has a suite of elegant rooms, with moulded dados, and marble fireplaces.
