House. Dated 1777 by deeds; altered. Coursed sandstone with dressings of
the same, stone slate roof. Double-depth 2-bay plan. Two storeys,
symmetrical, with some classical features; plinth, ground floor sill-band,
raised quoins, gable chimneys, gable copings with kneelers; up 2
semicircular steps, a central board door with shouldered architrave and
pediment, and at 1st floor above this a vertical rectangular window with
similar architrave; otherwise, 2 coupled vertical rectangular windows on
each floor, all with raised plain surrounds, and all windows with altered
glazing. Left gable wall, watershot, has doorway towards the rear, a
3-light flush-mullion window on each floor to rear of this, and a blocked
Venetian window to the attic. Right gable has lean-to at ground floor
(apparently remains of earlier and smaller building, outlined on gable
wall) and blocked 2-light flush-mullion window to attic. Rear has inter
alia a large Venetian stairwindow with triple keystone, and glazing bars
making Y-tracery in the head. Interior: doglegged flying stone staircase,
the soffit of the returned upper flight waved by cyma-moulding to each
step, with stick balusters (some damaged, some missing) and ramped
handrail; fielded panel doors; fluted architraves to stairwindow and
passage archway; in front right room at ground floor, a built-in cupboard
with shouldered panels (damaged); at 1st floor, 2 original fireplaces with
shouldered surrounds, moulded entablatures and cornices, one of these
containing an iron hob grate with curved cheeks.
