MORETON PINKNEY SP54NE 4/116 Lodge Farmhouse, barn approx. 30m. W

GV II

A large, three-bay mid C18 barn, converted late C20. Squared, coursed limestone,slate-covered gable roof, coped at each gable end. The cart entrance openings are unaltered and have inserted, timber-framed glazed panels and doors. There are C20 casement windows, doors and a small porch on the west elevation. Slit vents at north end of east and west elevation, and an inserted C20 door at the south end of the east elevation.

Interior: A mezzanine floor has been inserted. All of the fixtures and fittings are late C20, but the lower part of the roof trusses are apparent, comprising tie beams, purlins, (some wedged in place) and some exposed principal rafters.

The barn has group value with the listed farmhouse to the west. To the north of the barn, there are a number of outbuildings, substantially altered in the late C19 and C20, with brick patching, concrete floors and softwood timber roof trusses. Although attached to the barn, they have no apparent special interest.

Summary of Importance: Lodge Farm Barn is a C18 barn, 30 m west of Lodge farmhouse, converted in the late C20. Barns are generally the most impressive of farm buildings and although many later examples survive, those pre-dating 1840 have rarity value. Despite its conversion in the C20, Lodge Farm barn retains most of its historic fabric, including the roof, and has sufficient special architectural and historic interest in the national context to fulfil the listing criteria.
