Details
TG 21 SW OLD CATTON SPIXWORTH ROAD (west) 4/15 69, 71A, 71 and 73 19/1/52 (The Firs) (formerly listed as The Firs, Nos. 1, 2 and 3).
G.V. II*
House, extended and divided into 4, c.1750 and later. Red brick and black pantiles. Double pile house with cellar and 3 storeys. Formerly with 2 linked symmetrical single storey wings, now heightened to 1½ storeys, and extended in C20 to south, and heightened to 2 storeys to north. Central block has 5 bay facade, with central door and 1½ height windows on second floor. Sash windows with heavy glazing bars and stone Gibbsian flat arches. Raised and fielded 6 panel door with semi-circular fanlight and glazing bars. Doorcase with panelled reveals, engaged Ionic columns, pulvinated frieze and pediment. Entrance inserted in window opening to left of centre with modern stair to first floor. Brick plinth moulded timber eaves, curved gables with stone copings, extended with horizontal section to mask central valley. Gable stacks to each pile. South wing, 2 bays with sash windows with heavy glazing bars, semi-circular heads and timber architraves with key and impost blocks. C19 sash windows with glazing bars above. Plinth. Rusticated stone quoins at the edges of shallow projecting central bay. North wing has ground floor sash window as south, but with inserted door to right with raised and fielded 6 panel door with fanlight and re-used semi-circular fanlight from window it replaces. C19 sash windows with rusticated stone flat arches and heavy glazing bars. Plinth and quoins as south wing. Moulded timber cornice to hipped roof. Stone cornice at first floor level with central section missing, but linked to eaves cornice of the single storey early C19 pedimented wing to north. Centre bay of this wing set foreward, with central sash window with heavy glazing bars and rusticated flat stone arch. Above, pulvinated stone frieze and inner pediment. Stone parapet eaves to hipped roof. At the rear, central section has 5 bays, a.a.b.a.a., with central shallow projecting bay with pediment. In central bay at ground floor, 6 panel part glazed door with fielded panels and semi-circular fanlight with glazing bars. Timber doorcase with projecting open pediment on consoles. Venetian window to stair landing with pilasters, pulvinated frieze and glazing bars. At second iloor, window with semi-circular head, timber architrave with key and respond blocks. ½ height sash windows to second floor. Sash windows with splayed rectangular pattern of heavy glazing bars, flat stone arches with key stones, moulded timber cornice, stone quoins articulate north and south wings which have later inserted windows. Fine mid C18 interior detail. Hall with decorated cornice and landing with fine almost Rococo ceiling. Dog-leg stair with open strings, curved tread ends, iron twist balusters and moulded hand- rail, all lit by the Venetian window with pilasters and pulvinated frieze. Raised and fielded plaster panelling with dado on ground floor parlour, and in first floor boudoir which has scrolled pediment over the fireplace and a quilted cornice. Raised and fielded 6 panel doors with shouldered archi- traves. Raised and fielded window shutters. Semi-circular arches to Hall with key and impost blocks. C20 addition to south not of special interest.
