5/65 Garden walls, Gazebo & Urn to north & north-west of Intwood Hall
II
Walls to rectangular garden C16. Shortened and restored c.1850, brick. Embattled north wall of C16 with short section to west of C19 to match; terrace to front with brick retaining wall of C17/C18, stone urn to centre with frieze of vines having masques to north and south, birds pecking grapes to east and west whose outspread wings form urn lip. Embattled west wall of C16 with 3 recesses to interior under 4-centred arches having rear walls with every 3rd or 4th course of bricks on edge, bricks 24 x ll½ x 4cm. C19 gateway to north to terrace with stone urns surmounting piers. Gateway to south of C16 brick arch set in short section of C19 wall, 4-centred arch with round shafts, continuous wave moulding, all in rubbed brick. Embattled south wall in Flemish bond of mid C19. The garden originally extended further south. C19 doorway to right (towards east) in C16 style, wood, with spandrels showing Gresham arms and Mercers' Company arms. East wall mainly of C16 brick. Gazebo in north-east angle; octagonal base walls C16-C17 brick, extended downwards to exterior with angle pilasters. Wood weatherboarding; octagonal tiled roof. Wood door and doorway to garden to south-west with carved spandrels. Rear: jettied above tall brick base, 3 faces from north to east glazed with casements with glazing bars. Interior with bench to 7 faces, wood panelling and plaster walls, dentil cornice; trapdoor for cockpit. The garden is said to have been much used for cockfighting. Garden Walls attached at north-west angle: C16 to 1845, brick and flint. Walls enclosing rectangular garden. Wall to south embattled in brick having C16 brick externally, flint internally; central brick gateway c.1845 with plain semicircular arch, brick keystone, stone lion couchant above; low C19 cast iron gate. Wall to west mainly of C16 brick, ramped to south; external wall with 6 tall recesses to embrasures, some infilled. Wall to east of brick internally, with high flint base externally. North wall externally of C19 Flemish bond brick, graffiti includes "CHH 1845". The garden was enclosed c.1845 using existing walling, some of which had been incorporated into farm buildings demolished c.1845. Intwood Hall not listed.
