GV II

Ornamental garden building : walled garden, portals and sculpture. 1848-1860, by John Bateman. Rock-faced coursed stone; chisel dressed to portals. Semi-circular retaining wall of approximately 1Om diameter and 1.5m high. Built against embankment with double-headed Chinese, block-constructed portals at either end. Life-size, painted plaster sculpture of Brahmin Cow placed over wall at centre of semi-circle (shown with canopy cover in Country Life article of 1905); 2 serpent forms are cut into the lawn in front of the retaining wall. Forms part of Chinese Garden perambulation - the rather ridiculous animal forms are typical of Bateman's sense of humour, as seen also in the Tea House (q.v.). The cow was made on the site by the sculptor, Waterhouse Hawkins.
