Public dispensary, now health centre. 1904. By F Bedford and S
Kitson. Rusticated ashlar ground floor, brick with stone
details above, slate roof. Corner site; 5-storey, 3-bay main
front with 3,1,3 windows; bowed bay on right return, curved
corner bay and narrow bay to left return, the range facing
Hartley Hill continuing as 3 bays each of 3 windows and single
storey over basement, (added upper storey); left again and
stepping up: 2 storeys, 3 bays with 1,3,3 windows, entrance
bay left.
Main facade: recessed double doors with fanlight in
round-arched rusticated archway, large putti support an oriel
window above, rusticated pilasters rise to modillion eaves
cornice, 4th-floor ashlar 3-light dormer window, segmental
pediment flanked by pilasters with carved plaques. Sash
windows, in keyed architraves to ground floor, Gibbs surround
to 2nd floor, square windows in architraves to 3rd floor,
balustraded parapet.
Right return: the bowed front has 3 sash windows to each
floor, attached columns follow Classical Orders. Left return:
curved bay has detailing as right return, bay to left as
front; rusticated ground floor continues as basement storey as
ground slopes up, large keystone to doorway right, keyed
architraves to windows. Ornate doorway far left has rusticated
pilasters, stone plaque carved with 'OVTPATIENTS/ ENTRANCE',
scrolled pediment broken by niche with statue of a draped
female figure with large book; the left 3 bays have
rustication repeated on 1st-floor window architraves.
Balustraded parapet overall.
