House, latterly workhouse, then convent, now offices to factory and factory storage in part. Former one house with No.13 Sandy Lane "Craigside" (qv) until 1920s. Mid to late C17 with late C19 frontage. The 2 wings now forming No.13 Sandy Lane intersect at right angles and the north-easterly wing of No.13 Sandy Lane appears to have connected with the main block at half landing level. The south-westerly wing to No.13 Sandy Lane is free standing in relationship to Boughton House. EXTERIOR: south-west block mid to late C17, 3 storey, longitudinal slate roof, red-brown C17 brick to south-west end wall, with flush sandstone quoins to south and west corners. Parapet and gable parapet with plain sandstone coping and moulded sandstone band course at 2nd floor level. Remainder of block has late C19 lined stucco, south-east wall has deep parapet and north-east wall gable parapet both with plain sandstone coping. To south-west end wall two 12-pane sashes to 1st and 2nd floors, with wedge lintels in Ruabon brick. To north-west end wall tripartite sash to 2nd floor and French window to 1st floor, both with moulded hoods and consoles. To south-east wall, 2nd floor one lancet window with leaded lights and C19 painted glass. To ground floor of south-west end wall, C19 chapel wing as canted bay, Ruabon glazed brick parapet, with terracotta semicircular-headed mullioned windows with leaded lights and C19 painted glass. To north-east end wall ground floor wing with terracotta balustrade forming balcony to 1st floor. To north-west late C19 block forming new frontage. 3 storey with shallow symmetrically arranged bays in E plan in early C17 manner. Hipped slate roof, with hipped gables to terminal wings, terracotta finials. Ruabon glazed brick, parapet, moulded coping and cornice in red terracotta, moulded bandcourses at 1st and 2nd floor levels in terracotta, terracotta pediment to main entrance in central by surmounted by terracotta cross. Door with double 4-panel doors below basket arch. 12 pane sashes one window to each storey of each bay except at ground and first-floor to non-projecting bays where there are two 8 pane sashes. INTERIOR: C17 dog legged, closed string stair of oak, upper flights above half landing has 90 degree winder to lower part. Flights to 1st floor and lower flight to 2nd floor have

barleysugar on vase balusters. Upper flight to 2nd floor and second floor landing have stick balusters, square newels with astragal mould, moulded pyramidal cap, heavy handrail with astragal moulds. 2nd floor has two C17 oak doors, one of 2 panels with wide stiles and rails and bolection panels and reverse ogee moulds. Landing to 1st floor has C17 plaster ceiling bound by scotia type cornice with rose petal motif to each corner. Subdivided into four panels, with central roundel by ribbed astragal moulding with floral stops. Each panel has central floral medallion. Central circular boss with roundel. Boss bears armorial devise, depicting griffen mounted on saddle above angled shield, and appears to incorporate most elements of the arms of the Lathom family of Astbury & Congleton (a branch of the Stanley family). The outer circumference of the roundel incorporates rose petal motifs and stalks and opening buds. The rooms to the 1st floor have chamfered beams with chamfered stops. All other interior details are Victorian. The chapel wing retains an arched wooden screen.
